Welcome!

The Adams Fire Department and the Massachusetts State Fire Marshal offer the following tips for preventing dryer fires.

Dryers cause 1/5 of the fires in nursing homes and are one of the leading causes of fires in homes, hotels, and hospitals.
  • Safety Tips
    • Clean the lint filter screen after each load. This will keep the vent clear. When accumulated lint clogs the vent, the dryer can overheat and a fire could result.
    • Stay home while the dryer is in use. Never leave the house without first turning the dryer off.
    • Clean the hose pipe that vents to the outside at least twice a year. Use a vacuum cleaner to suck out accumulated dust and lint.
    • Do not forget to clean the motor area occasionally. Dust and lint can accumulate here as well.
    • Do not overload a dryer. Severely overloaded dryers can strain the motor and cause excessive heat build-up.
    • Avoid the use of plastic dryer vents. Instead choose solid metal.

Have a happy and safe winter season.
